Shrub is proud to announce that its Prepare & Protect Hair Primer has won Best Sustainable Hair Product in the woman&home Beauty Awards 2020!
Beauty Editor, Fiona McKim, says: “The first thing I noticed was the smell – it’s like a posh spa in the middle of a meadow. A little of the vegan-friendly, liquid plastic-free cream goes a long way to smooth and heat-protect hair.’
Shrub is being recognised within the beauty industry for its sustainability efforts, particularly in raising awareness of liquid plastic usage in beauty products. Liquid plastics are the much smaller, invisible form of microplastics that are poisoning our oceans every single day via the haircare products that we flush down our plugholes. During lockdown, Shrub launched its Make The Change, See The Change campaign, which developed as a result of reports that Planet Earth had put itself into reset mode and aimed to educate consumers on the harmful effects that liquid plastics inflict on our environment and human life.
Smaller than 1mm in size, liquid plastics pose a much bigger problem than other microplastics as they are impossible to retrieve from our waterways. Unbeknownst to most beauty consumers, they are commonly found in haircare, skincare and bath products to make them more spreadable; then rinsed down our drains which are ingested by our marine life, and in turn, us. Shrub called for consumers to use the unprecedented times to look at the small changes and choices we can all make, so that once we are through this pandemic we don’t undo all of Planet Earth’s hard work.
As well as campaign work on liquid plastic usage, Shrub harvests the majority of its ingredients from the UK countryside, resulting in a much lower carbon footprint. Shrub is the first haircare brand to use the remarkable Lunaria oil (more commonly known as the Honesty plant), which is converted within 200 miles of Northstar Lipids farm, Lincoln. Other key ingredients, sourced from Blue Sky Botanics in Herefordshire, include nettle, elderflower and white willow.
Finally, with ethics and values at the heart of the brand, Shrub pledges to always be completely transparent with its consumers; from the science and story behind the brand to recycling goals. Shrub’s bottles and lids are fully recyclable and made from PCR plastic, but our pumps currently aren’t. Plans are constantly underway to improve packaging and recycling efforts.
Shrub, who launched into the UK market in February 2020, is thrilled to have won this award, particularly as it hit shelves just before lockdown. It’s an honour to be up there in the hall of fame with some well-known beauty heroes!
